derby day opening Tottenham's new stadium: 'Arsenal in March likely to be first match'

Tottenham supporters may have to wait until March for their new stadium to open.

The north London club were due to move into the redeveloped White Hart Lane in September but have been hit by a series of problems.

Spurs confirmed last month that their remaining games in 2018 will be played at Wembley, which has been their temporary base since the beginning of last season.

They have an agreement in place to stay at the national stadium for the rest of the 2018/19 campaign, but remain insistent it will be ready at some stage this term.

And, according to The Times , contractors on the project are working towards two different opening dates – the clash with Manchester United on January 13 and the derby with north London rivals Arsenal on March 2.

The report claims that the building companies involved believe the match against Arsenal is the most likely to be the first at the new stadium.

Spurs recently announced that their next six home matches will be played at Wembley, up to the visit of Wolves on December 29.

They are expected to offer an update on the new stadium at the start of next month.

When open, the 62,000-capacity venue will be one of the most state-of-the-art arenas in world sport.

Former chairman Lord Sugar had a tour of it recently and called it the ‘best in UK, Europe and possibly the world’.

I cannot influence his decision."

Capello: 'Barcelona signed Messi because of me'

Capello: 'Barcelona signed Messi because of me' Former Italian national team and Juventus manager Fabio Capello has said that he had a vital role in helping Barcelona sign Lionel Messi. The Argentine once again wrecked havoc in the Champions League yesterday and Liverpool fell victims this time, as Messi scored a brace with one of them being delightful free-kick. It was also his 600th goal for Barcelona. But Fabio Capello has revealed how he had a big role in helping Barcelona sign the Argentine magician back when Frank Rijkaard was the Catalan boss. Capello: 'For me, Messi is a genius; the rest are just great' Capello told in  the Sky Sports studios : "In those days President Laporta told me:"Messi is here thanks to you ". We played a match against Juventus against Barcelona in the Gamper trophy, Messi was 16 and after 20 minutes I told Rijkaard: "With you he does not play, he is the fourth foreigner: give him to me, I keep him for a year an...

14 lions on the loose in South Africa

A pride of 14 lions is on the loose near a mining community bordering South Africa’s Kruger National Park, officials said Friday and warned members of the public to be alert. The lions have been spotted roaming around the Foskor phosphate mine outside the town of Phalaborwa on the western boundary of the famed wildlife park, which is fenced in. It is suspected the big cats escaped from the park, said the government of the northern Limpopo province, which has allocated rangers to monitor the pride while officials decide where to send them. “Employees at Foskor Mine and members of the public are hereby advised to be alert at all times,” the provincial department of environment and tourism said in an online statement. It said a meeting of government and park officials had concluded that the lions must be captured and released into the Kruger National Park. But park spokesman Ike Phaahla said this was not feasible, as the new arrivals “will continually break o...

Sergio Ramos: They could make a Ballon d'Or for Cristiano and Messi, then another for everyone else

Sergio Ramos: They could make a Ballon d'Or for Cristiano and Messi, then another for everyone else Sergio Ramos  has joked that  Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo  deserve their own Ballon d'Or award separate from the rest of the football world. The Argentinian won his sixth last week, putting him ahead of the Portuguese's five, which the latter apparently wasn't best pleased about, but his former  Real Madrid  teammate has a solution. "They could make a Ballon d'Or only for  Cristiano and Messi ,"  Ramos  told Ivan Zamorano in an interview with TUDN. "Then there could be another for the rest. In the end it'd be better for football." The  Real Madrid  captain has been key in their recent domination of Europe, winning four Champions Leagues in five years in the capital, but there's one moment that stands above the rest for him. "The goal in Lisbon," he responded when asked what was his best Champions League memory, ...

Transfer: Real Madrid Speak on Messi

Real Madrid director, Jeronimo Farre, has disclosed that the club is yet to sign Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, because the Argentine international has not been feasible or affordable. He also stated that Messi is yet to play for the Los Blancos because Zinedine Zidane’s side has not been able to make it happen. Messi has been at Barcelona since his days as a teenager, with the 32-year-old developing into one of the best players of all time in the world. “If Messi hasn’t played in Madrid it’s because we’ve not been able to make it happen,” Farre told El Mundo. “Because he hasn’t been feasible or affordable. “The other mega star was Cristiano Ronaldo and Madrid enjoyed his talent for nine seasons.” Farre added, “Real Madrid are the most successful team on the continent. “We had our lean times, but we had Alfredo Di Stefano’s cycle with great players who gave us the first five European Cups. “Under Florentino [Perez]’s presidency we’ve had another brilliant time with ...

The former stars Gary Lineker, Rio  Ferdinand , Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard were discussing the genius of Leo Messi right after Chelsea match on Wednesday night. " He's not on the same wavelength as everybody else ," said Frank Lampard, the retired Chelsea legend who, having faced Messi several times before, knows from experience. "As soon as that ball was set back — a great ball by Iniesta — you knew exactly what was going to happen. Very clinical." Rio Ferdinand's take went one step further than Lineker's. "I just feel that he — in his own eyes and in his own vision — the game just slows down for him ."
